Computer Related Skills

• Very familiar with MS DOS, MS Windows (3.1x to 2000, NT), UNIX/Linux, and X-Windows platforms. Also very familiar with many software packages such as MS Office, MS Works, MS Visual Studio, Paint Shop Pro, Animation Shop, Adobe PhotoShop, Corel PhotoDraw, as well as many others. Also familiar with UNIX-based software.

• Seven years experience in HTML, web page authoring and design, graphic design, and web site maintenance. Responsible for setting up and maintaining the web site and mailing list of a discussion group with over 40 international members since 1995. Have been webmaster for St Mark's Church, CeNeS Pharmaceuticals plc, and currently nGame Ltd. Experience includes building sites from scratch, maintenance and improvement of existing sites, complete site redesigns, templates, CGI programming, and e-commerce applications. • Four years experience of perl programming for personal projects and for employers - for the website and associated tasks, and for other projects. Currently learning PHP. Three years experience in Javascript and one year of VBScript, including replacement of "Outlook Today", mostly using VBScript. Attended and passed a VB training course. Preparation of VB software on a subsequently shelved project. Partially responsible for real-time control system programming in BASIC at CeNeS. Some programming experience at University in Modula-3, C and C++, ML, and Prolog.

• Involved in administration of multi-user internet-based conferencing systems ('talkers'). This includes training novices from around the world to use the system, extensive documentation of commands, maintaining and updating the web sites, and in one case, maintenance and bug-fixing of the code (in C). Their usage has extended from purely social to a form of conference calling with contacts from other companies.

• Training of users at all staff levels in effective use of PCs and in the various software packages installed upon them. Design, drafting and production of training manuals and user guides, including implementation and evaluation. Preparation of layout, design and content for software manuals, and logo graphics for manuals, software and company use in print and online.

• Personal experience of setup and administration of internet-connected, multi-OS, multi user PC running Linux and Windows 95/8. Building and configuration of PCs as workstations in a company environment.

Employment and Work Experience

• July 2000 - Present nGame Ltd, Cambridge - Web Designer, Art Team Leader
  Responsible for creation and maintenance of corporate and game websites (http://www.ngame.com/, http://www.dataclash.com/, http://www.alienfishexchange.com/, http://www.merchantprinces.com/, http://www.nano.ngame.com/), for graphic design and implementation of game interfaces for web and Digital Interactive TV (including Liberate, Power TV and MSTV platforms to date). Became Art Team Leader in August 2000, and responsible for scheduling, organisation and necessary training of five other members of my team, and freelancers. Have learnt php and wml (for WAP) in addition to my other skills.

• March 1998 - July 2000 CeNeS Pharmaceuticals plc, Cambridge - Webmaster / Software Developer
  Originally a young biotech firm called CeNeS Limited. I have been here through much growth and a reverse takeover resulting in the larger pharmaceuticals company that CeNeS is today. During this time the focus of my job has changed from real-time BASIC control system programming, to writing VB code and associated side projects for a company knowledgebase, and finally to purely website programming and development.

  My projects have included:

  • Maintenance and bug-fixing of existing programs and writing new programs to a set specification for a real-time control system, written in BASIC with an extended custom-built library, to run on Acorn PCs. The design, layout and content for a manual for the controlling part of this software, with individual user guides for each control program.
  • Customisation of the company-wide "Outlook Today" page using databinding tables, VBScript and Javascript. Research, specification and design of a company knowledgebase including VB interfaces to a sales database.
  • Design, specification and implementation of a web-based forum for users of the company's main product . This consists of 5 perl scripts, and includes personalisation, individual user accounts, admin tools, details of the latest messages on "Outlook Today" for certain staff.
  • Redesign of the company's external website - production of several different designs for the final choice by the directors; implementation of the selected design; many back-end changes to improve maintainability and cohesion; inclusion of comprehensive visitor tracking.
  • Questionnaire designs for the website, to improve on the 6-page original. The new site includes a new question for each visit, linked to visitors in order to build up an overall picture of their browsing habits and opinions.
  • Design and implementation of an e-commerce site as part of the new website. This includes working very closely with the Network Manager to install a leased line and new server, assisting with setting up the server and firewall, and configuring apache and sendmail.
  • Liaison with heads of other departments in each of the London, Cambridge and Scottish offices, to arrange new content and enhancements to their section on the website.
  • Many other perl scripts for website forms and behind the scenes, including statistics, booking forms and more. General website development. Monitoring of search engine and directory listings and improvement of the site to enhance these listings. Monitoring of current browsing habits of visitors, popularity of sections, search engine keywords, etc.

• August 1997 - November 1997 Bircham & Co, London - IT Assistant
  Duties while working in this law firm included:
  • Setup and configuration of a new Novell 3.12 server to replace three old and poorly maintained servers.
  • Administration of the new system.
  • Design and implementation of a backup strategy.
  • Training of users on the old system.
  • Design of a training worksheet to familiarise users with the new server.
  • Setup of a system for remote access to the internal network, production of a Remote Access Guide and the training of users thereon.
  • Providing complete technical support for all users on all aspects of the system.
  • Documentation of the old and new systems, including creating and maintaining a user database and design of better forms required for administration of the system.

• September 1996 Hill & Knowlton, London - Helpdesk Operator - One month contract
  Jobs in this PR/advertising company included:
  • Providing hardware and software support both personally and by telephone to 250 users in London, Manchester and Europe.
  • Maintenance of Novell 3.12 servers and physical network.
  • Design of departmental intranet web site.

• 1991 - 1995
  Ten weeks in total at a Veterinary Surgery, an Animal Rescue Centre, two separate dairy farms, and a sheep farm. Duties involved both practical nursing and administrative work.

Other Interests and Responsibilities

• Support Deva (Vice Chair) for Digital Eve, Cambridge - assisting in getting the group off the ground and setting up a local chapter of Digital Eve.

• Student Computer Officer for Fitzwilliam College - Setting up SCO scheme, maintenance of PC and Macintosh network, provision of assistance to other users, installation of physical network.

• Singer, soloist and flautist in church, school, chaplaincy and university choirs. Concerts included King's College Chapel and Royal Albert Hall. Organise charity carol singing every Christmas with 30 musicians and singers.
