The Harem officially began September 26, 1995 when Illiane emailed the Harem Guidelines/Bylaws/Rulez/Whatever as a joke. The following is a brief outline of how we began and progressed.

On September 25, 1995 a few females from Mars Base Alpha Four decided they were bored with just sitting around chatting and proceeded to make things interesting. Adjourning to the Jacuzzi, they invited some of the males to join them and had a lovely time flirting and making the men.... squirm. Instead of simply racking this up as another spod session, the females began emailing back and forth and chuckling over the effect they had on the men.

Soon it became apparent that a females-only club was emerging and quickly embraced by women anxious for a change from the male-dominated Internet. To poke fun at the men, the group was named The Harem, and each member chose colors to represent herself. As interest grew a mailing list of sorts was created. Each member set up an alias to include each of the other members and emails flew thick and fast. Soon it became evident that a real mailing list was needed and some structure required as we grew by leaps and bounds. Rillaith volunteered (silly girl) to maintain a private mailing list, and began a Harem homepage listing the members and their biographies.

From the original 6 the Harem has grown to its current roster of 40, where it has stabilised, at least for the near future, while everyone gets to know each other properly. Some Guidelines have been implemented regarding new members, inactive members, voting, and confidentiality and The Founders set up in a mostly advisory capacity to assist the Admin, who run the day-to-day show. The Harem is still wholly female and revels in it.
